The announcement came during a live broadcast on NHL Network and hobeybaker.com.

An outstanding second year player, the sophomore forward from Hermantown, Minnesota has been one of the top scorers in the nation all season long. Teamed up with his brother Zam and Jayson Shaugabay, the trio formed one of the most formidable forward lines across college hockey this past season. Max proved early on this was going to be a special year as he collected points in 11 of his first 13 games of the season.

As the Bulldogs closed out the season with a one-goal loss to Michigan in the NCAA Albany Regional final, Max completed the season with 25 goals and 27 assists for 52 points in 40 games. That positions him third in the nation in points and tied for second in goals. He averaged 3.8 shots per game (152 total) to finish third in the country in shots. He was also top ten in the nation in game winning goals (6), power play goals (8), short-handed goals (2) – all while averaging 1.30 points per game, eighth in the nation. Plante also produced 15 multi-point games.

Plante was recognized with a truck-load of awards including: National Collegiate Hockey Conference Player of the Year, NCHC Forward of the Year, First Team all-conference, College Hockey News Player of the Year and he was named the National Forward of the Month for October when he picked up nine goals and nine assists in his first nine games.

Max’s dad Derek was a Hobey Baker top ten finalist in 1993 as a senior for Minnesota Duluth; went on to a nine-year NHL career, plus five seasons in Europe, before landing with the Bulldogs as an assistant coach for seven years and three more seasons as an assistant with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Max competed for Team USA at the World Junior Championship for two years (2025 and 2026). The NCHC Scholar-Athlete is a Communications major and lends his spare time assisting at youth hockey clinics and learn to play programs. Max is a second-round draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings (2024).

Hobey Baker was the legendary Princeton (1914) hockey player known as America’s greatest amateur athlete over one hundred years ago. He redefined how the game was played with his coast-to-coast dashes in an era when hockey was contested by seven players and no forward passes. Baker, a member of the U.S. Army’s Air Corp, died testing a repaired aircraft at the end of World War I after he had completed his military service. The Hobey Baker Award criteria include displaying outstanding skills in all phases of the game, strength of character on and off the ice, sportsmanship, and scholastic achievements.

Plante was selected from a group of ten finalists by a 30-member selection committee and online fan balloting.

In Memory of Jessi Pierce https://hobeybaker.com/2026/03/22/in-memory-of-jessi-pierce/ https://hobeybaker.com/2026/03/22/in-memory-of-jessi-pierce/#respond Mon, 23 Mar 2026 01:50:06 +0000 https://hobeybaker.com/?p=80696

The ‘State of Hockey’ has lost one of its brightest lights. Jessi Pierce, along with her three children and family dog perished in a house fire early Saturday morning In White Bear Lake. Pierce spent more than a decade covering the NHL, mostly as a contributor to NHL.com while covering the Minnesota Wild. She also contributed to other local outlets and was a mainstay at Hobey Baker Award events.

To know Jessi Pierce was to know a fierce advocate, a brilliant hockey mind, and—most importantly—a deeply kind soul. Her dedication to the game was matched only by her generosity toward the people within it. Jessi didn’t just understand hockey; she championed it. Whether she was debating a play or simply offering a kind word, she gave her time freely and without expectation.

Lost in the fire were her three children: Hudson, Cayden and Avery. Jessi attended the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Banquet and Golf Tournament almost every year. While her hockey IQ was second to none, she brought a different kind of brilliance to the golf course – a bright light and a warmth that made every round better for those around her.

We are heartbroken by her passing, but we are so much better for having known her. She was a mentor, a friend, and a tireless cheerleader for the game we all love. Her absence will be deeply felt, but her kindness will not be forgotten.

He passed away Monday, September 15 at the age of 91.

Williamson had left a strong imprint on the Minnesota and U.S. hockey scene. Moving to Minnesota after being raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Murray starred for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers in the late 1950’s, becoming an All American in his senior season and team MVP.

A short semi-pro playing career led to his focus on coaching, beginning with the St. Paul Steers in the United States Hockey League. This led Williamson to several assignments as coach of U.S. national teams. He guided team USA in three World Championships (1967, 1969 and 1971). Two more national stints included the 1968 and 1972 USA Olympic Teams. The ’68 team finished sixth at the Grenoble, France Olympics, followed by a silver medal in the 1972 games in Sapporo, Japan.

In 1973, Murray helped form the Midwest Junior Hockey League, which in time, would become the highly recognized United States Hockey League, America’s top junior hockey league. Also that year, a new international tournament was formed that would become one of the great stages for future NHL’ers, the World Junior Hockey Championships, which will be coming to Minnesota for the 2025-26 tournament. Williamson was the first U.S. National Team coach in the tourney held in Leningrad, Russia.

Williamson was inducted into several Hockey Halls of Fame: U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame; Massachusetts Hockey Hall of Fame; the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame; and the University of Minnesota Athletic Hall of Fame. Murray became involved with the Hobey Baker Award shortly after its founding in 1981 at the Decathlon Athletic Club in Bloomington, Minnesota.

From all of us at the Hobey, our thoughts go out to the Williamson family. Thanks Murray, for all your legendary contributions to hockey in the U.S.

In addition to celebrating Isaac Howard, the banquet also paid tribute to the 2025 Legend of College Hockey, Dick Umile. Umile, a long-time and highly respected coach, was honored for his significant contributions to the game. His recognition underscores the Hobey Baker Award’s commitment to acknowledging not only the players who excel on the ice but also the individuals who have shaped the sport and its values. The combination of recognizing a rising star in Howard and a legendary figure in Umile made for a memorable and inspiring evening for everyone in attendance.

Isaac Howard Wins 2025 Hobey Baker Award https://hobeybaker.com/2025/04/12/isaac-howard-wins-2025-hobey-baker-award/ https://hobeybaker.com/2025/04/12/isaac-howard-wins-2025-hobey-baker-award/#respond Fri, 11 Apr 2025 23:00:00 +0000 https://hobeybaker.com/?p=69851 The Hobey Baker Memorial Award Committee announced today the 2025 recipient of college hockey’s top individual prize is Isaac Howard from Michigan State University. The announcement came during a live broadcast on NHL Network and hobeybaker.com.

The junior forward from Hudson, Wisconsin has had a phenomenal season in helping guide the Spartans to the Big Ten conference regular season and playoff titles – both for the second straight season. Howard became a dangerous scoring threat every shift as he had the nation’s best points per game average, chiming in at 1.41 points per game. He finished his season with 26 goals and 26 assists for 52 points in 37 games. With just the national championship game to go, Howard sits fifth in the nation in scoring and is tied for third in goals.

Plenty of accolades followed including Big Ten Scoring Champion, First Team all-conference and the league’s Player of the Year. Additionally, he is a First Team All-American in the west. “Ike” as he is known around the team becomes the third Spartan to win the Hobey following goalie Ryan Miller in 2001 and forward Kip Miller in 1990.

Howard scored the majority of his goals at even strength but did add five power play tallies and notched four game winning goals. A prolific shooter, he fired 169 shots on goal to rank fifth in the country, while logging just over 19 minutes of ice time per game. He took only five minor penalties in his Hobey Baker season. Collecting points in 29 of his 37 games, Howard had 14 multiple point games including a four goal and one assist night versus Penn State.

After spending his freshman season at Minnesota Duluth, Howard transferred to the Spartans to continue his Communications Major. He was a first-round draft (31st overall) of the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2022. He spent two seasons with the U.S. National Team Development Program and earned multiple medals in U-18 and World Junior Championship competitions. He spends some off-ice time with the Spartans Triumph Together program assisting kids in Children’s Hospital.

Howard was selected from a group of ten finalists by a 30-member selection committee and online fan balloting.
